Written statement of the Mary Christ Society (or “Sociedade Filantrópica Maria de Nazaré”, an organization in special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council) submitted to the 68th session of the “Commission on the Status of Women”¹

A civilization that does not give primacy to the protection of its least valued members is unfeasible.

The dignification of femininity, which necessarily involves the empowerment of women and girls, would bring unequivocal positive results in the field of political-cultural, socioeconomic and even military strategies.

It is easy to make the crass mistake of getting distracted by the urgencies of an alarming war scenario, with emphasis to the conflagration between Ukraine and Russia and the recently erupted terrorist conflict involving Israel.

However, it is of the utmost importance that we recognize that, at the root of every invasive, violent and/or terrorist territorial dispute, we will inevitably find the diabolical seed of the degenerate patriarchalism, which for so many centuries has plagued humanity .

Nothing will be resolved, in a definitive way, with the horrendous expressions of ghastly slaughter on the battlefronts, if we do not turn to the deep roots of this multi-millennial cancer that has caused bloodshed to stain the history of our earthly community, both in the form of anachronistic carnage of Dantean fratricidal escalations and in the cyclopean monsters of hunger, pandemics and all the corollaries of poverty – such as structural failures in basic sanitation, minimum medical and hospital support and access to education and technology.

The institutions, whether governmental or not, that support gender diversity need to be honored with support not only at the political and mediatic level, but, above all, in the pragmatic sphere of financing their approaches to helping billions of women and girls who do not enjoy access to the basic benefits of education, for example, academic and professional, that qualify them as citizens in their homelands, as citizens of the world!

The speeches and infamous warmongering initiatives of confrontation between nations, peoples, ethnicities and races are the consequences of the infernal web of irrational, inhuman and genocidal assumptions that make ignoble the daily lives of hundreds of millions of women of any age group and, on a global and multifaceted scale, degenerate into the problem of the international expansion of the nuclear weapons arsenal and the very acute and unpostponable matter of climate and environmental crisis.

There is no more time to waste on words thrown to the wind. It is urgent to raise awareness, and effectively unfold it into practical and sustainable measures that will politically and financially support all serious organizations that work to minimize, in whatever sphere, the countless and serious problems that revolve around the lack of equality in the treatment of people, based on the obsolete and obscene misogyny that wounds, bleeds and keeps hemorrhaging, on the verge of irreversible collapse, the entire humanity of our small planetary corner.

 It is well known that there are practical and economically feasible ways, using digital technology, to guarantee a better-quality education for girls and women all over the world, enabling them, even those living in the poorest and most remote regions of the planet, to be included in the world of formal education and basic professional training, as well as in the primary elements of civics and political awareness.  

Simplified digital applications that offer internet access, even if via satellite, and a minimally effective and trained organization of teachers recruited to make the necessary cultural and linguistic adaptations in this global movement of mass education, are perfectly achievable when there is – as has been known all along – political will on the part of the governments of the wealthier and more developed nations, in the sense of an appropriate orchestration of material and human resources, with the engagement of non-governmental organizations and volunteers not affiliated to specific political, religious or social advocacy groups. 

It is lamentable to observe, year after year, the neglect of the greatest humanitarian cause of our time – in our opinion – because it encompasses, directly or indirectly, literally or metaphorically, all other minority causes: the rediscovery of the sacred value of femininity and, consequently, the empowerment of all women, since girlhood. 

While an ocean of financial resources is continuously dedicated to space exploration and other investment fronts of more or less questionable value in pragmatic and also moral terms, such as the powerful arms industry, we note, with horror, the contempt, to a demeaning degree, suffered by half of the human species – that of the female gender -, especially in poor countries or in cultures where misogyny and patriarchy are more deeply rooted or even fiercely celebrated.  

The time has come to put a stop to such a serious crisis of planetary conscience, tragically symbolized in the oppressive and genocidal feature of hypertrophied and degenerated masculinity in stereotyped and apocalyptic phalluses: the nuclear missiles, both those considered “merely” tactical and strategic, in a surreal threat of nuclear Armageddon, in the middle of the third decade of the 21st century!

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), the notable English philosopher, once said that “hell is truth seen too late.”

Lamentably, there are renowned observers, authorities in various scientific disciplines who believe that we are already past the tipping point in terms of reversing the grave picture of apocalyptic tones, in the climate crisis that we are living, especially because of the slowness and varied resistances, of political and cultural nature, in the implementation — which must be urgent and broad — of sustainable political-economic measures on a global scale.

The humanity-ocean relationship alone is, per se, a gigantic problem, even though 80% of the oxygen we consume comes from the oceans’ vast and invaluable natural resources.

If we consider, then, the terrestrial face of the ecosystems, the difficulties are massive when evaluating the probability of us achieving an implementation of important changes to the eco-conscious use of its renewable or non-renewable resources, changes that effectively have an impact on the short and, especially, on the medium and long terms, with the aim to make viable the human presence on the surface of the planet.

It is essential to invest all possible resources and make every effort we can in the education and enlightenment of the younger generations, regardless of gender, about the kaleidoscopic complexity of the subject, and even in the re-education of the older ones, who are the current decision makers, toward a conscientious management and an indispensable readiness to a profound change of paradigms used to deal with the essential ecological theme, inextricably intertwined with the etiology of the current and future — inevitable, according to experts — pandemics.

No serious, broad and lasting initiative will succeed, on a planetary scale, while there are disparities or even, in certain sectors, subtle misalignments, between governmental actions, be they of poor, developing, or rich nations.

And to overcome this geopolitical cacophony, it is indispensable to meet the pressing needs regarding fundamental matters of basic infrastructure of education of both genders, including the pillars of food, sanitation and medical-hospital coverage for countries less equipped to adjust to the international demands for the survival of the human civilization in the unprecedented crisis with potential for self-extinction that we are going through.

Despite what we have said above — and perhaps precisely because of the acuteness and breadth of the problem — we must never abandon hope, optimism, and above all, the channeling of these principles into the actions of individuals and communities, in a courageous and persevering way, until we achieve the minimum results that guarantee the perpetuation of our species on the Earth’s crust.

Re-empowerment of women and girls in a world in serious, urgent and multifaceted crisis – Written Statement sent to the UN CSW66

It is imperative to conjecture and debate about possible means to transmit, within human societies, in all peoples of the Earth, socio-political-economic power to people of the feminine gender or identified with femininity, especially in such a serious multifaceted crisis that we are going through, facing severe ecological imbalances, with threats of mesological, climatic and pandemic disasters, at scales, for now, unpredictable, but whose most extensive effects impact, as always, the poorest communities of the world, in terms of educational, medical-hospital, food and digital infrastructure, etc.

We consider, however, that it is essential to reiterate our opinion, already brought to light in a lecture proffered at our Parallel Event to CSW65, held on March 15, 2021: the power need not, in principle, even be granted to women and girls – it would suffice to be recognized as pre-existing, as blatantly revealed by unequivocal evidence recorded by paleoanthropologists, in matriarchal cultures from the beginnings of humanity on our planet.

Life, par excellence, revolves around women. Through the uterine cloister of women – into whom the girls will one day become –, new human beings flourish, as if, metaphorically or (perhaps) literally, pregnant women became living temples, from which new generations spring into the world!…

Urgent is any political measures that foster effective actions, whether partisan or not, arising in the sphere of public activity or in the domain of private initiative, coming from the government of nations or from the participation of NGOs, individuals  or informally organized small groups, in the sense of enabling women and girls to receive education, professionalization and medical-psychological assistance, encouraging them to revive or awaken their awareness of their own power to act in the world and transform it.

Such measures, of course, must be guided by the creation of practical expedients, according to the context of natural and material resources, in the environment of each reachable feminine population, although they need to respect, to a certain extent – to be realistic and achievable –, the cultural parameters and paradigms deeply rooted in certain localities, some of them multimillennial.

The scientific community unanimously proclaims, through the simultaneous prism of various disciplines of knowledge, the glaring emergency to take immediate, effective and lasting measures so that humanity, in our small planetary corner, can survive the enormous challenges and dangers of today, especially in the field of the environmental crisis we are experiencing.

It is impossible to ignore, in this calamitous circumstance of our history, that half of the human contingents – women and girls -, continue to be rejected and vilified, just as for centuries they have been oppressed and often abused, physically, psychologically and/or morally, often in horrendously and abominable anachronistic ways.

Let us wake up before it is too late and fight for the survival of women and girls, of all of us, including men and boys… because the galloping of the “chariot of events” is so fast, that countless of the most brilliant minds, from various areas of human knowledge, consider that we have already passed the point of no return from an irreversible process of free fall, toward the disastrous bottom of the abyss of the complete extinction of our civilization and species on the globe… annihilating, with us, an expressive part of the fragile earthly biosphere that we compose.

As an organization in special status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), since 2018, the Instituto Salto Quântico (Sociedade Filantrópica Maria de Nazaré) has been invited once again¹ to submit a written statement, in the preparatory preambles of CSW65 — The sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women —, to be held in March 2021.

Therefore, the Spirit Eugênia-Aspásia informed us that the Sublime Mother of our orb wanted to transmit the solemn document that will constitute our participation in the prestigious world congress.

Below is the English translation of the Message of Mary Christ — originally received in Brazilian Portuguese, according to the mediumistic interpretation of the illustrious spiritual counselor —, which will be forwarded to the reputable international organization this week.

“In women, feeling and intuition better unite with reason and action.

In girls, sweetness and tenderness already show, as care for their fellows, due to their maternal instincts, even if they never become, as adults, biological or adoptive mothers.

In the feminine approach to critical global problems, it is easier to find the urgent resolutive directives that humanity, in this time of apocalyptic contours, so desperately needs:

- respect for the ecosystems, in an organic view and in a participatory attitude with the planetary biosphere;

- cooperation between disparate peoples and cultures, in the search for solutions of mutual benefit and universal fraternity;

- harmonization between social segments and dignification of minority groups, within nations;

- consensus and integration in interpersonal relationships and among conflicting psychological aspects, within each creature…

In short, in all senses, from family squabbles to international disputes, such as the serious and urgent environmental, political, economic, social, psychological and spiritual emergencies of today, it will be under the inspiration of the feminine conceptual matrixes of welcoming, of acceptance and understanding of the differences, of empathy and of a more humanitarian purpose, that humankind will perceive the seemingly non-existent way out to the successful journey through the multifaceted and ultra-complex crisis of survival that the civilization and the human species now face, as they have never faced and may never face again another one so dangerous, profound and intricate… ”

For successive centuries, it was believed, as an unquestionable axiom, that women could not take positions considered to be of greater responsibility, because they would be inept to play roles that were regarded as exclusively meant for the modus operandi of men, for the masculine way of perceiving and thinking the world.

In the early decades of the modern feminist movement, great benefactors of humanity have bravely postulated that women were fully capable of performing any task executed by their counterparts of the opposite gender. The two great world wars of the twentieth century made this potential very clear, with the immersion, in mass, of millions of women in industrial and battlefield support activities.

For most of the past century, countless legions of sisters of our species then made the effort to psychologically cross-dress, acting, speaking and even interpreting existence from a male perspective, so that they could be respected as competent professionals and academics.

As the end of the last century approached, however, it began to sprout, in professional women of various fields, the willingness to imprint into the workplace their feminine prism of seeing, feeling and acting, adding significant value to the efficiency of business, research and achievements, in all areas of human action and knowledge. It became obvious, hence, that women could not only do everything that men could, but they could do it differently and, very often, better.

In the universe of science, of the arts, of public administration, of media, among others, bloomed the realization that the feminine presence brings, in every sense, an extraordinary complementation of productivity and of quality in services, creations and deliberations, within institutions, companies, human groupings. Still to this day, women’s contribution is barely dimensioned. Nonetheless, they have broadened angles of observation, opened previously undetected possibilities of solution to old problems, integrated apparently divergent perspectives. They also have carried sensitivity, intuition, beauty to the contexts they take part in, although many of their contributions are not even measurable or immediately profitable.

The results, however, in the course of the last decades, of this movement of insertion of women in all sectors of social life, becoming more and more powerful in culture, in politics, in entrepreneurship each day, have not yet been clearly recognized and are often understood as consequences of a natural evolution of civilization. Yes, there is this development, coupled to a revolution of paradigms; yes, there is an expansion of the potential to grasp the reality, a greater lucidity and shrewdness in the interpretation of events, a more accurate intuition in the pursuit of purposes and creative solutions to problems. But all this can be perfectly attributed, without any exaggeration in the association of cause and effect, to the progressive and massive participation of women in the concert of societies.

Finally, at the turn of the century, it was already clear enough, in more enlightened environments, that women’s influence was of paramount importance to the broader and more effective success of any enterprise, to the point that their male colleagues began to realize the need to acquire certain skills more peculiar to the feminine psyche, such as empathy, tolerance for difference, the power to endure contradictory and indeterminately unresolvable situations.

Even leadership, so valued in our ultra-competitive culture, has been much better understood and exercised by women, in accordance with contemporary principles of respect for difference of opinion, for free will, for discernment, for the personal choices of others. And so, men more attentive to the evolutionary trend lines of the culture and of the “collective organism” began to realize the need to compensate themselves for their limitations in many of these so relevant cognitive and social abilities that women have and that almost spontaneously sprout from their complex and subjective feminine minds, such as the greater propensity to multitasking and to the spirit of coordination and cooperation in work teams.

Today, women are seen as more appropriate options for many positions of action and command that before were entirely dominated by the masculine gender, just as more feminine men or even gay men, in various professional settings, end up being privileged, exactly for having an experience of better integration of the two complementary psychic poles (feminine and masculine) of human consciousness.

On the other hand, in considering the historical crisis of survival we are experiencing on a world scale, especially in regards to environmental issues, to fratricidal clashes between cultures and civilizations and to progressive nuclear arms race between nations, it becomes evident that the feminine worldview and their inclusive and conciliatory approaches are urgently needed.

Therefore, we are of the opinion that, with the utmost urgency and in the greatest quantity possible, women must be placed in prominent positions – in the heart of communities, countries and organizations –, to heal the dangerous imbalance generated by the exacerbated masculinity and to reverse the risk of extinction of our species on the globe and the devastation of the entire planetary biosphere.

We understand, therefore, that it is not simply a women’s right to gender equality, but a moral duty for all of us (men and women), a crying need for humanity: to honor femininity, in order to foster, by all the means and resources available to us, the ascension of women to positions in the upper echelons and preferably of direct leadership, in the fabric of society, in as many and as broad battlefronts as possible.

Fritjof Capra, in his classic “The Turning Point” (1982), states that we live a “crisis of perception” in our civilization. Thomas Kuhn, in his work “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” (1962), describes the historical cyclical phenomenon he called “paradigm shifts”, in the field of sciences and human values.

It is urgent to unleash a revolution, involving the whole planet, of a systemic, multifaceted nature, on all fronts of human action, encompassing from major decisions, in the scope of national and international policies, to the implementation of social inclusion and economic survival measures.

The monster of war seems like a wound that never heals, and terrorism becomes increasingly dangerous, as revealed by the spread of nuclear weapons technology that haunts our future.

The cultural, religious, economic and political problems and conflicts of today are complex, just as the urgent issue of the acute imbalance in the self-regulating functions of the ecosystems. However, scholars of various areas of knowledge agree that we have plenty of techno-scientific means to overcome all the problems that threaten the human species and the biosphere.

However, without the political will of statespersons, without the awareness of the masses, including the so-called “educated” populations of Earth’s most developed and wealthy nations, the survival of humankind will not be possible.

The tribal mentality of nationalism is incompatible with the growing closeness and interaction among diverse cultures, in an overpopulated globe with scarce and severely threatened natural resources. We must see ourselves as Marshall McLuhan’s “global village”, a single community, interconnected and interdependent, but we must eradicate the primitive belligerence of disputes over territory, inherited from our phylogenetic past, from our “excessively” animal neurophysiology.

We all are (or should be) conscious of it. Overwhelmed by information, we use fast-advancing technologies and science, but we stubbornly behave like self-centered primates, dividing ourselves into ethnocentric groups, whether linguistic, geographical or religious and cultural.

If we do not stop judging ourselves as superior to one another and believing it is possible for any human group to survive to the detriment of others, sooner or later, we will all fall into the abyss.

Having all the resources and intelligence to save the planet, it becomes clear that the issue is not merely logical, but psychological – as Stephen Covey highlighted. The problem lies in our psyche and in our culture of using thought processes to justify primitive emotional manifestations. Either we change our feelings, or the cognitive disorder that has been corrupting the deliberations of governments and important corporations, relating to the personal choices of billions of individuals, will continue, dragging us all toward the precipice of self-destruction.

Call it humanism, spiritualism without religion or ecological consciousness, we will have to take this leap of perception and interpretation of reality, toward truly feeling and relating as brothers and sisters in humanity, awakening to the inexorable need of cooperative and solidary coexistence of all people and peoples, on this same speck of cosmic dust we call planet Earth.
